John enlisted in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force at Sussex, New Brunswick on 7th August 1915. He was described as a labourer, 5′ 5″ tall, with fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair and his religious denomination was Roman Catholic. He carried out basic training with 55th Battalion and departed Canada aboard SS Corsican on 31st October, arriving in England on 9th November for further training. He committed a number of offences while in England:

• 12th November – detained for being drunk at Bramshott, Hampshire.

• 30th November – awarded Field Punishment No.2 for being in possession of a bottle of whisky.

SS Corsican (11,419 tons) was built for the Allan Line by Barclay, Curle & Co Ltd in Glasgow. Her maiden voyage on 31st October 1907 was from Liverpool to St John, New Brunswick. She was chartered by Canadian Pacific Line in 1908 and on 12th August 1912 suffered slight damage in a collision with an iceberg near Belle Isle. In August 1914 she became a troopship and in 1917 was taken over by Canadian Pacific Line. On 24th August 1918 she commenced her first voyage on the London - Québec - Montreal route. However, on 30th January 1919 she resumed the Liverpool - St John service, later switching to the Glasgow, London, Liverpool or Antwerp to Canada service. In November 1922 she was renamed Marvale and her accommodation was altered to cabin and third class only. On 21st May 1923, she was wrecked in thick fog when she ran into Freel’s Rock, off Pine Point, Newfoundland. All 437 persons aboard were saved.
