JUST HOLD ON! Kikka shouted in their minds.

Warren was hardly lucid as she grabbed him beneath the arms and dragged him toward one of the cavern walls to lean against the cool, rough surface.

Another chill raked down his spine when the rocky wall seeped its frigidness into his body. He suddenly felt tired enough to fall asleep, even with his wet clothing and frozen atmosphere. His eyelids drooped, but then he felt slender fingers cradle either side of his face before Kikka gently patted his cheek.

Stay awake. I will find a way to build a fire.

“You know how to build a fire?” he asked weakly.

Cyra taught me. Though, I’m not sure I’m very good at it.

His eyes drifted closed again as he heard Kikka’s footsteps echo away from him and farther into the cavern. Sleep rolled into his mind like fog on a humid morning, overtaking him slowly until his mind could no longer fight against its influence.

Very slowly, his body ceased shaking, his mind whirring with flashes of images that he thought might be a dream but also suspected they were not. He recalled the faint flash of smoke. The rattle of a snake. Gentle hands touching his arms.

But then his eyelids cracked open to find Kikka bathed in a warm, orange glow. The flames of a fire flickered behind her and reflected off her long, wavy hair cascading over her shoulders. She knelt in front of him between his outstretched legs and helped ease him out of his sopping wet tunic.

Once again, shivers wracked down his frame when his bare skin made contact with the frozen cavern wall behind him.

You can’t wear wet clothing, she explained as she laid the tunic out on the ground beside the fire. You will be worse off wearing it.

“Do you want me to take off my trousers, too?” he jested feebly, watching as adorable color climbed into her cheeks as she turned away from him, avoiding eye contact.

Whatever will keep you warm.

But he hadn’t the strength to attempt the feat and tried to remain conscious as his body soaked in the heat from the flames. He glanced sluggishly around the cavern, recognizing the large crevice in one of the walls where Koa had once hidden in an attempt to scare them. Aiden had nearly jumped out of his skin at the time and had socked Koa in the face hard enough to give him a black eye.

His mouth twitched at the memory, at the hope of knowing they were close to an exit. Really close. But he wasn’t sure he could stand on his own two feet to reach it when his body refused to move.

Kikka returned to her spot between his legs, hands resting in her lap as she whispered in her mind, I can keep you warm. If you will allow it.

An overwhelming desire to hold her in his arms struck him right through the chest. He wanted to hold her close, to breathe in her scent, to take what comfort and warmth she might offer him.
