CHAPTER THIRTY

Under Pressure

Gus paced up and down the aisle between the seats in the main cabin. He had left the confining pilot’s cabin, partly to blow off some steam but also so Seneschal would not see how frustrated he was. He had to show a persona of control and authority so the Crew would respect him.

He tried to rack his brain to figure out how they would get the materials they needed. He was hoping that the figure Yuki estimated included all the security upgrades and other improvements. If so, perhaps they would at least have enough materials to furnish the hospital upgrades, and they could come up with the base materials for security systems later.

Seneschal announced they were preparing to land as soon as the landing zone was clear. Gus peered out the window to see the rest of the Crew moving equipment out of a boxy transport with twin thrusters jutting out of sides on small wings.

Tension twisted in Gus’s gut as he anticipated relaying the bad news to the rest of the team. It wasn’t his fault, but he still felt responsible that he was unable to prevent the theft. He wondered if Seneschal was equally sore that the thieves managed to get away somehow. Gus continued to pace as thoughts and plans tumbled around in his head. How he would word what he was going to say to the others and where to go from here.

What felt like an eternity later, they had finally unloaded, and the transport was maneuvered into the hangar, allowing space for Seneschal to land. The odd pressure of anticipation of finding out where they stood with available supplies and what they could do was countered by the worry about how everyone would deal with the bad news.

As soon as the corsair had landed, Gus had steeled his resolve. Better to face it directly and address it quickly, like pulling off a band-aid. He called a meeting in the conference room as soon as everyone had finished what they were doing.

Heading straight to the conference room, he was the first to arrive and sat there. He flexed his hands into fists and extended them, his hands displaying his agitation and uncertainty. He eventually laced them and held them in front of him on the table. Closing his eyes, he took some deep breaths, which seemed to marginally calm him, but his mind was ping-ponging around, wondering and worrying about what they needed to do next.

He opened up his tabs to check on the timer, which should be finishing up soon. He doubted he or the rest of the Crew had accrued any more FP, but it was possible they had a quest that popped as they gathered the medical equipment.

27 minutes, and 14 seconds remaining on multiplier. Current multiplier 2.74 x.

Projected bonus XP: 287,250

Projected bonus FP: FORFEIT. FP Spent on Gymnasium before timer elapsed
