Chapter 15

Exhaustion consumed Perrie from head to toe. A crazy asshole and an unsolved murder were enough excitement for one day. She didn’t fight the need for sleep, so she lay down next to August and closed her eyes. They forfeited warmth and chose to sleep on top of the blankets. Who knew where these sheets had been and what horrors they’d seen anyway.

August pulled her close and wrapped his arm around her stomach. Taking hold of his arm, Perrie tugged it up to her chest and shut her eyes. It felt nice to be held again. It felt even better knowing that August was the one keeping her close. Her body heated at the thought.

Perrie didn’t want to think about murder or Jack the Ripper right now. She wanted to think about a time when everything, mostly everything, was fine, and possibilities were endless. Yet something terrifyingly good could happen. So she chose to think about that night at the prom when her feelings had started to change for August.

After everything that had happened with Neven, she hadn’t wanted to go to the prom. She was never big into dances or anything like that, yet Maisie was, and her cousin hadn’t wanted to miss the prom. Perrie insisted she take someone, but Maisie told her she wanted to go and hang out with her. Perrie had been extremely reluctant to cave to her begging. Then, when Perrie wouldn’t budge, Maisie made a desperate play at lunch one day.

“August, will you go to prom with us?” Maisie asked.

Perrie had been sitting beside him at the time and was totally caught off guard. He was in the middle of swallowing a french fry and choked from surprise. She started patting his back and he grabbed his water bottle and started chugging. “You guys are going to prom?”

Maisie leaned forward with her strawberry eye patch and said, “Yes, if you’ll take us?” She hadn’t even given Perrie a chance to answer.

Perrie looked at both of them. “There’s no way I’m going. If you two want to go, then more power to you. I’ll be at home in my pajamas, most likely having a personal movie marathon.”

“If Perrie doesn’t go, then my duty will be joining her at this movie marathon.” Grabbing Perrie, August hauled her to him in a side hug. He stroked her hair with his other hand while shrugging at Maisie.

Maisie threw up her hands, squeezing her fists in front of her, and begged, “Please!”

“Fine.” Perrie sighed in defeat, wiggling out of August’s arms. “I refuse to wear heels, though.”

“Yes!” Maisie pulled her arm in a downward fist pump.

Perrie rolled her eyes and laughed.

August had picked them up for the prom that weekend. Perrie hadn’t gone too fancy with her attire, opting for a relaxed curl in favor of an expensive updo. Her dress was red and strapless, tight on top with a wicked flared skirt right above her knees. Like she’d told Maisie, Perrie would not be wearing heels and had chosen a pair of black flats instead.
