Chapter 18

Nick pulled on his clean T-shirt and cast Rachel a hooded glance as he zipped and buttoned his jeans. “Keep watching me like that and we’ll both be wearing nothing again real quick.”

Color tinged her cheeks as she met his gaze. For a moment, she looked like she was considering taking him up on the idea, but then she swiveled back to the desk, her dangling silver earrings swaying along with her ponytail.

Disappointment barely registered. He was too busy trying to figure out what to make of her mood this morning, and her undivided attention the past couple minutes. He didn’t think she regretted last night, but something had changed that he couldn’t put his finger on.

After a quick check of his phone, he slipped it into his pocket and zipped his bag shut. A flick of his wrist twisted the strap just so before he stepped toward the desk. “We’ve got a little over two hours before the church opens. You want me to run out for breakfast, or would you like to go together?”

She shuffled the letters on the desk and picked one up. “If you don’t mind, I’d like to keep working on these. I haven’t focused on them enough as it is.”

“I don’t mind.” He stopped behind her, hands on her shoulders. “Any special requests?”

She leaned her head back, and her smile made his heart skip as she said, “The usual.”

“Cappuccino and pastry?”

“Yes, please.”

Unable to resist that smile, he bent to drop a kiss on her lips. Her fresh shower scent and soft lips had him fighting not to open his mouth on hers and drink her in. The woman was addicting, tempting him like no other.

After too brief a kiss, he lifted his head and returned her smile. “I won’t be long.”

“I’ll be here.”

When he glanced back as he shut the door, her attention was focused on the letter in her hands.

Yeah, something has definitely changed.

Could he trust it? After last night, could he trust her, or would he end up being played for a fool?

He debated the situation while finding a bar nearby to get their caffeine to go and some breakfast. On the way back to the hotel, he stopped about a block away. Frate Lucio’s words kept coming back to hound him.

“When you find what you believe you are searching for, be careful you do not lose that which is infinitely more valuable.”

Setting the cups and bag on a jutting windowsill, Nick pulled out his phone. He started to dial Thorpe, hung up as he paced a few steps, then redialed. While the phone rang, he leaned back against the building, letting his gaze scan his surroundings.

Venezia in the summer. This early, people peppered the streets, but not anywhere near the crowds that would inundate the city later in the morning and through the day.

His call connected, and Thorpe answered without preamble. “Got something for me?”

“No.” Nick watched a couple strolling hand in hand as he raked his fingers through his hair.
