“You cannot enter the library without answering three riddles.” Sylvester’s voice drifted upstairs when I walked down from my room the following morning. “One, how long is a broomstick?”

“Sylvester, what are you doing?” I entered the lobby and spied a bewildered Xavier on the other side of the door, which Sylvester had barricaded closed with a disused bookshelf.

“Testing our new security system,” the owl said from his perch on top of the shelf. “Everyone who enters the library must prove their worth.”

“I’m pretty sure Aunt Adelaide doesn’t want you quizzing all our patrons.” I beckoned Xavier inside. “Let him in, Sylvester. He’s here to see me.”

He also must have received the message I’d sent him the previous night given the concerned look in his eyes. I hadn’t been able to fit the details of the break-in into a text message, but once the adrenaline had worn off, I’d crashed until dawn.

Sylvester reluctantly moved so that Xavier could walk around the bookshelf barring the door. He could easily have used his Reaper abilities to bypass the door altogether, but he’d refrained out of politeness, which made the owl’s antics even more irritating.

“Really.” I beckoned Xavier to follow me into the living quarters since nobody else had come downstairs yet, and I was in dire need of coffee. “I guess you got my message?”

“A vampire broke in?”

“Not a vampire, but halfway there.” I explained the night’s misadventures to him while I grabbed breakfast and poured myself a mug of strong coffee. I had a busy day ahead, including having to break the news to Edwin that I’d handed a criminal over to Evangeline.

“You were lucky.” Xavier took a seat opposite me at the kitchen table. “Lucky she was untrained, that is.”

“And that Cass woke me up.” I sipped my coffee. “Not sure why she did, to be honest. She could have handled the whole thing herself.”

“I bet she wanted backup.” He glanced over at the clock on the kitchen wall. “I can’t stay long. My boss wants me back home for a lesson.”

“Don’t you already know everything there is to know about how to be a Reaper by now?”

“You’d be surprised,” he said. “Actually… well, he’s starting to train me on Reaping vampire souls.”

I nearly dropped my mug. “Not unwilling ones, I hope.”

“No, he’s just covering the theory,” he clarified. “We won’t get to the practical element for a long while.”

“I should hope not.” A shiver ran down my back. “Interesting timing.”

“I thought so, too, but I’ve been waiting for a while.” His steady gaze somewhat soothed my jangling nerves. “Relax, Rory. It’ll be like Reaping any other soul, which is a skill I use in one circumstance only.”

“Sure.” I let him pull me into a hug, though I couldn’t quite banish the thought that the Grim Reaper had chosen to teach him that skill for a reason.

Because he’d expected more vampire deaths to follow.
