SIXTEEN

THAT AFTERNOON, EDWARD paired me with Jace for a few minutes at the end of my practice session, as an introduction to melding our magic for use in a fight. I was still exhausted from last night, and not one hundred percent comfortable yet with my new focus—not to mention the fact that my powers were in flux after having drunk vampire blood for the first time in several days.

All in all, things didn’t go particularly well, and it was probably a good thing I hadn’t opted for Rans’ blood—or, god forbid, Zorah’s. It was a relief to sneak away after dinner and knock on Leonides’ office door. He looked up when I entered, a frown of concern sliding over his features.

“Vonnie. No offense, but you look like you’re one stiff breeze away from falling over.” He rose from his chair and started toward me. I met him halfway, relieved beyond measure when I leaned against him in an embrace and he didn’t stiffen or pull away. His arms closed around me, and some of the aching tension I’d been carrying in my neck and shoulders fell away.

“Need to talk to you about something Albigard said to me today,” I mumbled against his chest.

He was quiet for a moment.

“Can it wait until morning?” he asked.

I thought about it... or tried to, with my brain feeling like molasses. “Probably,” I decided.

“You need a night of uninterrupted sleep,” he observed. “I could walk you back to your room.”

“Yours is closer,” I told his chest. “Left a note on my door that I was going to talk to you, so no one’ll worry if they can’t find me.”

His grip around my shoulders tightened, and I hummed contentedly.

“All right,” he said. “Just to sleep; we both need it at this point. I’ll make sure to get you up so you can get back before Jace wakes up tomorrow.”

I nodded agreement, not moving from my comfortable resting place just yet. “I’m not trying to hide this, you know,” I told him. “I just need to have a talk with Jace about it first, rather than have him find out because he saw me sneaking back to my room with damp clothes and bed-head. I’ll do it tomorrow. It’s just been crazy the last couple of days, that’s all.”

His hand stroked my hair back from my face. “It’s been a decade or five since I was anyone’s dirty little secret. I can live with it for another night.”

I poked him in the ribs, hard enough that he huffed at me in amusement.

“You’re punch-drunk,” he said. “Come on, before you really do fall asleep and I have to carry you.”

We headed for his room. By comparison to the previous quiet, the resort was bustling as the new arrivals settled in. They were strangers, though, and none of them would have opinions about who was sleeping in whose room.

The white elegance of the space Leonides had claimed for himself enclosed me, reminding me once again of the penthouse
