FIFTEEN

DAVYN

My relief at seeing Azzie safe was tangible. It wasn’t that I never let her out of my sight, there were a lot of instances where we traveled separately, and met up again in new places.

However, after what I’d done to her yesterday, having her back allowed me to breathe again. The guilt from that moment, the memories of seeing her lying on the ground, unmoving, hung heavily in my heart.

“Are you all right?” I tried to keep my tone cool. To not let her think I’d been in a near-rage all night. And then realizing this morning that Dahlia knew exactly where they were—I was surprised she dared show her face here again. I didn’t give a fuck that she was a dragon, I was ready to take her down a notch.

“Never been better.” Azzie didn’t convince me for a second. “I need a shower.” When she left the room, Zeke went his own way.

This was where we were after him thinking he could take me? Whatever happened while the two were gone, I wouldn’t become smug about it now that they were back. As long as he hadn’t hurt her.

Dahlia joined Kirby, who was on the phone. In fact, the call seemed to be what promoted Dahlia to admit she knew where Azzie and Zeke were. It was good for both Dahlia and me that she’d left the room. If she’d stayed in my line of sight, it would give me more time to ponder how to better make her appreciate what she’d done.

I understood she was mated to two powerful gods, and Fenrir especially wasn’t someone I wanted to piss off. But keeping the secret that Dahlia had…

I took a seat at the kitchen table and let my thoughts simmer. There wouldn’t be training today. Not after what I’d done to Azzie. Not after spending a night wondering if she was hurt or worse. I didn’t understand how she’d gotten injured. Though it had been centuries since I’d seen any Valkyrie besides Kirby fight, one didn’t forget that they tended to not take damage. They had shields. They were fast. And even when they got grievously injured, they healed right away.

Magical weapons could hurt them. Could kill them. It was part of the reason Odin’s originals were all but gone. However, even though my turning into a bear was a magical act, my attacks themselves were purely physical.

Kirby had confessed that every other Valkyrie she’d created so far had assumed the power fully and completely right away. There was no coming into power for any of them. Yes, Kirby had to train them, because they didn’t tend to be fighters, but it had been easier given their super-healing.

Azzie would be furious if I refused to practice with her, but how was I supposed to help her?

Snippets of Kirby’s conversation drifted in, and despite me hearing half of what she said, and a quarter of how Gwydion—who was on the other end of the call—replied, I didn’t have a good idea what they were talking about.
