By noon, everyone was aboard. Devin had never met two of the couples, but she was very comfortable with Callie and Teresa and Linda and Lauren, so she wasnât concerned that sheâd feel like an outsider.
At least one member of each couple had gone to law school with Sunny, but two of them, while lawyers, didnât work in the field. But they were all professionalsâprofessionals who Devin was sure made a lot of money. They just had that look about them. Excellent haircuts, tasteful gold or silver jewelry, expensive watches, name-brand golf shirts and running shoes. But the shoes didnât stay on long. Within minutes, everyone put on flip-flops or slightly more substantial sandals. Michele and her partner Gwen had taken the bedroom right next to the one Devin and Sunny had claimed, and it became clear very quickly that Michele wasnât the shy one. Nor the quiet one. While Devin was unpacking, Michele came to their door and stood there for a second, then entered and dropped to the bed.
âSoâ¦whatâs your story?â she asked.
Devin turned and spent a few seconds getting a good look at her before she responded. She was a large woman; tall, broad-shouldered, and sturdily built. But what caught your attention was her gazeâdirect and level. She looked like sheâd never backed down from a confrontation, and Devin was almost certain she was going to like her.
âWhatâs my story about what?â she asked, turning to return to her task.
âWhatâs the deal with you? Are you and Sunny a couple? No one can get a straight story out of her.â
âWellâ¦â Devin closed the drawer that now held her shorts and tank tops and walked back over to Michele. âI think Sunnyâs the best person to answer that, but Iâve got nothing to hide. Iâm going home when Iâm ready to head back to work, or when Sunnyâs sick of me.â She smiled, trying to make it clear she was teasing a little. âWhichever comes first.â
âWhat exactly do you do?â
Sunny came in and put her arm around Devinâs shoulders in an oddly protective gesture. One sheâd never used before. âIf you want to chat, letâs go into the living room or the top deck. But donât treat my guest like sheâs on trial, Michele. Youâre not at work.â
Micheleâs partner Gwen poked her head in the bedroom. âAre you in trouble already?â
âYeah,â Michele said, standing and walking back towards the door. âBut it wouldnât be a normal vacation if I wasnât, right?â
