By noon, everyone was aboard. Devin had never met two of the couples, but she was very comfortable with Callie and Teresa and Linda and Lauren, so she wasn’t concerned that she’d feel like an outsider.

At least one member of each couple had gone to law school with Sunny, but two of them, while lawyers, didn’t work in the field. But they were all professionals—professionals who Devin was sure made a lot of money. They just had that look about them. Excellent haircuts, tasteful gold or silver jewelry, expensive watches, name-brand golf shirts and running shoes. But the shoes didn’t stay on long. Within minutes, everyone put on flip-flops or slightly more substantial sandals. Michele and her partner Gwen had taken the bedroom right next to the one Devin and Sunny had claimed, and it became clear very quickly that Michele wasn’t the shy one. Nor the quiet one. While Devin was unpacking, Michele came to their door and stood there for a second, then entered and dropped to the bed.

“So…what’s your story?” she asked.

Devin turned and spent a few seconds getting a good look at her before she responded. She was a large woman; tall, broad-shouldered, and sturdily built. But what caught your attention was her gaze—direct and level. She looked like she’d never backed down from a confrontation, and Devin was almost certain she was going to like her.

“What’s my story about what?” she asked, turning to return to her task.

“What’s the deal with you? Are you and Sunny a couple? No one can get a straight story out of her.”

“Well…” Devin closed the drawer that now held her shorts and tank tops and walked back over to Michele. “I think Sunny’s the best person to answer that, but I’ve got nothing to hide. I’m going home when I’m ready to head back to work, or when Sunny’s sick of me.” She smiled, trying to make it clear she was teasing a little. “Whichever comes first.”

“What exactly do you do?”

Sunny came in and put her arm around Devin’s shoulders in an oddly protective gesture. One she’d never used before. “If you want to chat, let’s go into the living room or the top deck. But don’t treat my guest like she’s on trial, Michele. You’re not at work.”

Michele’s partner Gwen poked her head in the bedroom. “Are you in trouble already?”

“Yeah,” Michele said, standing and walking back towards the door. “But it wouldn’t be a normal vacation if I wasn’t, right?”
