I stared at Shane until my eyes burned. The sister's story rang true in every syllable and every bone in my body. They just had no idea that what they'd experienced was actually believable to us. They likely knew how outrageous it sounded, and could only hope we'd have a rational explanation for the unworldly phenomenon.
Or did they already know of the mystical forces that hid within the occurrence?
Shane broke the stunned silence. "After their disappearance, did the villagers continue their attack on you?"
Millie shook her head. "No. Many had already run away in fear, and those who continued their pursuit witnessed our devastation at the loss of Courtenay.” Her eyes misted from the vivid memory. “They heard our wails as we cried out for our beloved sister. In their minds, they thought she’d been lost to the black wolf."
My head tipped as I clung to her last words. "Black wolf?"
Gertie lifted her head. "The biggest, blackest wolf ever to be seen," she blasted. "It chased the mob straight out of the woods and off our land."
Her arms flailed with the description, attempting to show the size and speed of the animal.
"But we knew he hadn't harmed our sister," Millie added. "We saw with our own eyes. Mistress Kelly and Courtenay went into that wooden teepee. And then they were gone. All of it, gone."
Gertie shook out her skirts. "We know it sounds like heresy. Witchcraft. Enough to have us burned in the village square. So, we've remained here, quietly, minding ourselves."
"Until today," Millie stated.
Her eyes darted to mine, and guilt coursed through me. Had our arrival sparked new interest from the village? Was it our fault they'd been targeted again? My stomach twisted with sour sickness from the thought.
"We need to help you then," I said. "We need to figure out a way to stop their hunt on you."
Millie shook her head. "It's too late. Once accused of witchcraft, one can never escape it. Whether we confess or deny the claim, both result in an execution. Only, the first course may result in a swifter, less painful method."
My eyes closed to shield myself from the torturous horrors of the witch trials. To have these women in danger of such treatment was more than I could stand.
"So, how have you stayed safe all this time, while Courtney was missing?" Shane asked.
"Ah, sound question. One I knew ye'd ask." Millie looked at Gertie as if creating a silent pact to trust us.
I glanced between them, wondering which would speak first. Courtney stood tall between them, equally curious.
Millie took a deep breath. "We refined our skills. Signed the devil's book, so to speak. And our powers grew stronger."
"The Indians have helped us too. They understand the rhythms of the earth best than anyone," Gertie added. "And they've helped with supplies, while we give them elixirs for their ailments."
I cringed at the term ‘Indians’ but knew it was the common reference to Native Americans at that time. I was just grateful they were helping each other, and only wished the cooperation could have continued through history.
