Bailey stands beside the Wrecking Tree Restaurant and Bakery on Red Rooster Cay in the Bahamas Out Islands and inserts coins with her right hand from the cache of change she holds in her left. The sticky phone is cradled with her bent neck.

“Hey Boss.”

“Hey Boo. Let me guess—you can’t get a flight out.”

“You think I’m kidding. Call and see for yourself, Sonny Boy.”

“It’s still two days before Christmas,” he says.

“Not happening, Boss. There’s a cluster ’til Tuesday. Come for New Year’s.”

“Where are you?”

“Red Rooster Cay. The Pilot House. It’s the same deal—same back of the truck transport, same dog, same bicycles. I’ve already staked out the front bedroom but you can have the bike with straight handlebars.”

“Now that’s what I call incentive. . . . If I left on the 29th that would only give me five days in Kirk’s Bluff.”

“You’ll be ready by then. Tell the home folks Merry Christmas. I’m at a phone booth and the lines might be long.”

“I’m not telling anybody anything.”

“Thanks, Boss.”

“I’m sure Cecil will be at our house for Christmas dinner if you want to call then and leave him a message.”

“Thanks, Boss,” she says again.

“You and your daddy are a pair of stubborn asses.”

“Thanks, Boss.”

“Call him,” Ben says. “For fuck’s sake, Bailey, it’s Christmas.”
