thirty-three rejection letters came back. She sent the manuscript to three publishers, and three rejections followed. She heard praise for her style but not for her storytelling skills. Turning rejections into a learning opportunity, Noreen enrolled in courses on criminal investigation and forensic science, collected crime articles from periodicals, and interviewed professionals in the field. One day she learned of a case that tugged at her heart. It was the story of a hardworking convenience store clerk who had been brutally murdered in a robbery. Noreen took the first hundred pages to a writers' conference that literary agents would also be attending. Before the conference, Noreen prepared carefully, researching each agent's background and level of success. At the conference, she showed her manuscript to her first choice, a representative from the prestigious William Morris Agency.

A few days later he called to say that the publisher hadn't met her demand. Instead, they offered $120,000 and a contract for two books, a deal almost unheard of for a new writer.

Noreen was fifty-two when she finally became a published writer. Her first book, A World the Color of Salt, published in 1992, received rave reviews and gathered a dedicated following. Carcass Trade, her second book, was published in 1994, and she recently completed her third. The Juan Doe Murders.

Although Noreen wrote for more than three decades before her work was published, she ultimately achieved her goal. No one
