J.T., Molly, and I followed Avery inside. Our footsteps thudded on the carpeted staircase up to the top level. I caught a glimpse of J.T. out of the corner of my eye as he cast a look at the Council Chamber before we passed through into the tech hub. Thoughts about how he was going to convince the rest of the Council to help us no doubt weighed on him. The screens on the desk were a jumble of information. I could see that by some miracle—and probably a little magic—she’d revived the battery on Jamal’s phone, too. Avery flitted from the keyboard to the phone, to another machine, and back again without speaking.

“I appreciate the urgency with letting us know you cracked the identity of our mystery woman, but why are you so freaked out?” I said, trying to pull her focus back to the reason she’d come to find us.

“Sorry, just one second,” she mumbled, fingers flying over the keys.

“Is she okay?” Molly stage whispered.

“No idea,” I answered.

“Hey, Avery, what’s going on?” J.T.’s voice was soft, soothing almost.

The tension in Avery’s shoulders relaxed and I could sense what almost felt like a guided air current pass by me and hit her directly. I closed my eyes, inhaled, and reached inward for just a sliver of power. Just enough to open my eyes to the magic around us and see what might be hiding. Sure enough, there was an invisible current pulsing from J.T.’s hand, flowing straight to Avery. He was using his healing gifts to help her calm down and focus.

“We had a breach,” she said, her voice slow.

“I think that might have been our fault,” Molly said, stepping up to place a hand on Avery’s shoulder. “I didn’t realize that the agents we were dealing with knew about magic and might think to look for any sort of intrusion that way.”

Avery sunk into her seat. “I thought I’d gotten sloppy or distracted.”

“You haven’t been taking much time off have you?” There was no judgment in J.T.’s question.

“This is what I’m good at. This is what I can do to help people. This is what …” she trailed off.

“What you think Desmond would want you to do,” I finished for her and she nodded.

“I know we didn’t know him in the same way, but I know for sure he wouldn’t want you pushing yourself to the point of exhaustion. You don’t owe anyone any of this.” I waved a hand at the space around us.

“It’s going to sound stupid, but I never felt really seen here … until Ezri walked through that door with that magically corrupted video footage.”

“Come on, everyone knew you were the best tech whiz here,” J.T. said with a smile.

“I felt useful when it actually helped catch the bad guy, but I’d be lying if I didn’t admit seeing all the dark shit you guys deal with doesn’t mess me up.”

I wanted to tell her she didn’t have to feel obligated to help us, but if I was being honest, I wouldn’t know where else to turn.
