Limitation Disengage: What Do You Want?

CONGRATULATIONS! YOU HAVE COMPLETED the first section of what I call “The Owner’s Guide to Being Human.” I’ve shared with you what Tony and I believe are the basic tools of personal power. You now have the techniques and insights that will allow you to discover how people produce results, and how to model their actions so that you can produce similar results. You’ve learned how to direct your mind and support your body. You now know how to get yourself to achieve whatever you want and help others achieve what they want.

The next obvious question is … What do you want? And what do the people you love and care about want? As simple as this question is, you’d be surprised how many people never ask it of themselves, let alone answer it. As a matter of fact, most of the time when I ask people what they want, they answer with what they don’t want. “I don’t want to work so hard,” “I don’t want to be overweight,” etc.

If there’s one thing that all successful people have in common, it’s that they all know what they want. Remember, the first step is always to know your outcome. Have you ever heard the saying, “Knowledge is power”? Well, knowledge is only potential power. Without action and an outcome, knowledge is little more than digital information. What good is having an ATM card if you don’t have a machine in which to use it? If you know where to find the ATM, how to use it, and why, you are in control of your situation. If not, all you have is a fancy piece of plastic.

One of the first things we learned is that the quality of your communication is the quality of your life. In this section we will talk about defining your outcome and refining those communication skills that will allow you to use your abilities in the most effective way for the situation at hand. It’s important to be able to map out a strategy so you know precisely where you want to go—and know the things that can help get you there quickly.

Since repetition is the mother of skill, let’s quickly review what you’ve learned thus far. The main thing you now know is there are no limits to what you can do. As Black Americans, we have so many potent references of successful people achieving so much—often in the face of some pretty severe opposition and persecution. Your key is the power of modeling. Excellence can be duplicated. If other people can do something, all you need to do is model them with precision and you can do exactly the same thing, whether it’s walking on fire, making a million dollars, or developing a loving relationship.
