Chapter Thirty-Two

I called Leesa, but got her voice mail. “What part of ‘Don’t divulge your sources’ don’t you understand? I got a call from my secretary, Liz Smithers. She has a cardinal rule never to call me at home, so you can imagine how pissed she was. In the British sense of the word, too, as she had a few Irish coffees. She doesn’t remember any of the names, probably never knew them, so leave her alone. And where’s the article? I can’t find it on-line. I thought the whole idea of electronic newspapers was almost instantaneous updates. Call me.”

That task accomplished, I went back to staring at the list on my computer screen. I was feeling pretty helpless (and hopeless) and not sure how to proceed. I called Trudy’s cell phone and didn’t bother leaving a message. She had probably already designed an app to read minds. Then I tried Sherry at home, but there was no answer. I didn’t bother with a message there, either, especially as the kugels were still too warm to slice and I didn’t know when I would drop them off. I then tried her cell phone, and she did answer. Or, rather, Josh did.

“Aunty Aviva, guess what? Bet you can’t guess. You’re pretty smart, but not as smart as MomT, no one’s as smart as MomT, except maybe Einstein, but he’s dead. And MomT can never guess what I’m thinking, so you can’t. She says she can’t figure out what I’m talking about even when I say it. But guess anyway.”

“Um, you’re answering MomS’s phone because she’s driving?”

“No. I mean, yes. But that’s not the answer I wanted. Give up? MomS is taking us to the movies! MomT’s more fun at the movies because she lets me get popcorn and a drink and candy, but MomS only lets me get popcorn and a drink or candy and a drink, but not popcorn and candy. But she said it’s a special occasion so I can get both. But Simi can’t. She had to stay home with Lynda. She’s too little. Not small, young. English is confusing.”

“What’s the special occasion?”

“I don’t know.”

“Maybe because Passover starts Monday night?”

“That’s not special. It happens every year.”

Conversations with kids with Asperger’s can be exhausting. “What are you seeing?”

“Some trees, and other cars, and street lights, and …”

“I meant which movie.” Other kids giving that kind of answer would be passive-aggressive smart asses. Josh was just being his literal self.

“I don’t know the name. I wanted to see a new animated movie based on a TV cartoon, but she said it wasn’t that special an occasion. So she’s taking me to a PG-thirteen nature movie, but I thought it was against the law to take me because I’m only eight but she said not to be scared. They won’t arrest her for taking an eight year old to a PG-thirteen movie and that should be the least of her worries. I don’t understand what she means, but then she said
