Chapter 15

The unfamiliar roads out of Prague were clogged, the first ten kilometres of our journey taking as long as the next one hundred. We made reasonable time though once we were clear of the congestion, passing through the border without slowing down and powering back into what was East Germany before the wall came down.

The car ate up the kilometres, but I knew we couldn’t make it back without stopping. I hadn’t got much sleep last night and was already tired when we left Prague just before four o’clock. We had six hundred kilometres to cover back to Bremen which would take at least four hours, the hold up in rush hour school traffic adding an hour before we had even really started.

I was in a hurry, but not at the expense of safety. Our plan was to go as far as we could and then stop for some sleep, setting off early the following morning to get back to Bremen for breakfast. Heike was asleep in the car before I hit the Prague outskirts.

By the time I got to Leipzig I was flagging, and halfway to Magdeburg, I knew I was done. I kept going a little longer, my eyes heavy and my body weary, but I wasn’t actually falling asleep so there was no danger to other drivers or indeed to myself or Heike. I twitched the wheel deliberately to wake Heike up when we were ten kilometres from Magdeburg. It was a big enough place for us to be able to find a small hotel with a restaurant nearby. A few hours sleep would see me right.

As Heike came awake, rubbing her eyes and smacking her lips together, I checked my broken compass again. The signal was still weak and still pointing directly ahead. Zuzana, or her body, was still out there, somewhere along this road. It felt weak to stop for sleep when a nineteen-year-old woman might be in mortal danger, but fatigue demanded it.

‘Where are we?’ Heike asked as she stretched, pushing her ample chest out as she forced her arms back in the confined space.

‘Just outside Magdeburg. Can you find us a hotel? One with a restaurant nearby?’

‘What kind of food do you want?’ she asked around a yawn as she fished out her phone.

‘I don’t care. I just need to fill my stomach and get a little shut eye.’

She squinted at the clock. ‘Have I been out all that time?’

I nodded.

‘I didn’t snore, did I?

‘Not at all,’ I lied. She snored so loud I had to wonder if she was part Minotaur.

Halfway through looking up hotels, she said, ‘Do you want to just push on to Bremen? We can’t have more than two hours to go.’

‘Less probably, but I’m beat.’

‘I can take over,’ she said around another yawn. ‘You can get in the back and sleep. I’m fine with that.’

‘I need to do the tracking spell as we go. It won’t work for you.’

‘Oh.’ She frowned. ‘How about we stop for some food.
