Chapter Ten

The kids were sugar-bouncing off the roof of the minivan before D.J. rolled into Gold Hill.

“I wanna show Uncle Max my new shoes!” James called from the rear seat.

“He’s working,” D.J. answered, not sure whether she did or did not want to see him, given the tension between them. Tension equaled stress, yet in a way this particular tension was rather…exhilarating, too. “You can show him when he comes home tonight.”

“But I want to show him now,” James persisted, “while they’re new.”

“They’ll still be new tonight, Jamie.”

Sean piped up. “What if our old sneakers fall apart and the house catches on fire and we all gotta get out, so me and James put on our new shoes and run outta the house, but then we fall in the mud and then when Uncle Max gets home he wants to see our new sneakers, but they don’t look new anymore?”

D.J. looked in the rearview mirror. All the children except Anabel were awaiting a reasonable answer to what they obviously considered a reasonable question. Anabel merely rolled her eyes.

“You make an excellent point, Sean,” D.J. said. “Unusual, but excellent. Tell you what, we’ll check all the smoke alarms when we get home. Then you and James can play quietly in your room—maybe work on a puzzle or color—some activity that won’t require you to wear your old shoes out of the house, so they won’t fall apart before your uncle gets home, thereby relieving you of the necessity to put on your new shoes, which will keep them beautiful until he sees them.”

“Does that mean no?” James asked in a genuinely puzzled tone. He looked so cute, D.J. wanted to jump into the back seat and hug him.

“I want the cherries from Uncle Max’s bar,” Livie said in a singsong voice while she stared dreamily out the van window.

“I want French fries!” Sean enthused.

“I want to see Uncle Max and tell him I missed him all day,” Anabel said sadly.

Well, that did it. Instead of proceeding to Sardine Creek Road—and the silver box that awaited her examination—D.J. headed for Tavern on the Tracks.
