A half hour later, Zoe, Eric, and Melanie had traveled the same circular route numerous times without progressing. One time, she mentioned heâd finally asked her out on a date, but her fragile memories disintegrated, never reaching any mention of teenaged sex or a pregnancy.
Or a child.
With Melanie focused on her soap opera, Eric and Zoe retreated to a corner of the room. âIâm sorry, Miss Chambers. I know youâd hoped to learn about your brother, but as you can see, sheâs not a great source of information most days.â
Zoe looked at the woman her mother loathed and wondered if maybe Kimberly shouldâve stayed to witness the conversation. âAs soon as I heard she had Alzheimerâs, I knew it was a longshot.â Zoe thought about the brick wall blocking her search. âMy mother believed Melanie mightâve tracked down her son,â she mused out loud. Bringing her focus back to the manager, she asked, âWhat if she did more than that? What if she made contact?â The idea rekindled the spark of hope that this wasnât a total wasted effort. âHas a man ever come to see her? Heâd be in his early fifties.â
Eric stroked his chin. âI donât believe so. You can ask at the front desk, but Iâve never seen a man of that age visiting her. In fact, other than her doctor and her daughters, she doesnât get much company. Thatâs why I came to check on you ladies. When I heard someone had asked about Melanie, I was curious.â
Zoe thought of the scene heâd walked in on. âI assumed you wanted to break up the altercation my mother was creating.â
He smiled. âThat too.â
She started to thank him for his time but stopped. âWhat about her daughters?â
âWhat about them?â
âIf Melanie had tracked down her son, maybe they know about him.â
Eric crossed his arms. âMiss Chambers, thatâs a big if. You admitted youâre here on a whim. Thereâs a very good chance Melanie preferred not to know anything about the child she gave up for adoption.â
âI realize that. But weâve driven all this way. I canât go home without exhausting the possibilities. Which, right now, is Melanieâs daughters. Could you give me an address or a phone number for them?â
âIâm sorry. We take the privacy of our residents and their families very seriously. The best I can do is take your number and pass it along to them. If they want to get in touch, itâll be their choice.â
And if they didnât, Zoe was back to square one.
