CHAPTER 36

Home of Melissa Masters, 7:15 AM

I knocked on the door lightly, and then a bit harder. This early on a Sunday morning, I doubted Miss Masters was awake. The door opened, and Miss Masters stood in a silk robe, and little else.

“Miss Masters?” I asked as Chuck and I showed our shields and ID’s to her.

“Yes?” She asked. “Can I help you?”

“I’m afraid we have some bad news Miss Masters. I think it would be better if you sat down.”

She walked us into a nicely furnished living room, and I saw two wine glasses sitting on the coffee table. One had lipstick smeared on it and I figured Adam had been here last night.

She sat on the sofa, crossing her legs and pulling her robe tighter.

“Miss Masters, were you in a relationship with Adam Schaeffer?”

“I am in a relationship…oh no!” She cried out. “Has something happened to Adam?”

“I’m afraid he was found this morning…he was murdered.”

“Murdered! By whom? How? Oh god!”

“Chuck, get Miss Masters a glass of water,” I said. I sat down next to her and took her hand in mine. “Is there someone you can call to be here with you?”

“I don’t know, I…I’m not sure,” She said and began to cry.

I stood up and took my phone out. I dialed Bell and when she answered I said, “Honey, are you okay with coming to Miss Masters’ home to be with her? If not, maybe one of your other bridge members?”

“What’s the address?” She asked.

I told her, and she said she would be on her way. I knew I could count on her. I returned to the living room where Miss Masters was drinking from a glass. Chuck was standing by, waiting for me to start asking questions.

Miss masters placed the glass down, took a deep breath and said, “I suppose you have some questions for me Detectives?”

I reached into my pocket, turning on my recorder and I saw Chuck do the same.

“We do,” I said. “Are you okay to talk now? If not, we can do this later.”

“I’m okay, just a shock. Ask away.”

“Can you tell us about your relationship?’

“Well, Adam and I were both divorced, him twice and me once. We didn’t want to get married again and we have been together for almost a year.”

“Did you both live here?”

“No, Adam would either spend the night here, or me over at his house. He lived close to Veterans Park, about halfway between here and there. About three or four times a week we would get together. Last night I…I surprised him. A bit of a sexy get up, something his two wives would have never done.”

“Do you know his two previous wives?”

“Not really, but I spoke about my ex and he did the same.”

“What time did Adam leave the house this morning?”

“Adam had a heart attack when he turned thirty. It changed him, all for the better. He lost weight, ate healthy and ran. Each morning he would run at four, taking the running paths through the city and ending at Veterans Park.
