Chapter 23: The Mountains of Madness

“I think I should come clean with you, Ianthill,” Morgoran said as he closed down the Migarath Portal on the By’temog, Ishrak side. “You should know this meeting with the Kragodor dragons might not turn out amicably.”

Ianthill stepped onto the first stair toward the open covering of the chamber. “Oh, and why do you say this? Have you foreseen it?”

Morgoran coughed to clear his throat. In reality, he was curbing his irritation. “There you go with that premonition foolery again. You just can’t believe me, can you? Do you realize how many images passed before my eyes over the course of a thousand years? Can you fathom how many different scenarios played out time after time over the same incident? Even if I did foresee it as you say, how would I discern the true future from all the rest?”

Ianthill thought for a moment. “I suppose you’re right. I think the very fact that you’re warning me excites my suspicion.”

“Well,” Morgoran coughed again, this time out of guilt. “The fact is that I have seen this meeting play out over and over and I worry about it.”

“Why the worry?”

“As I recall, it always turned out badly. Don’t forget that you and I are guilty of killing a couple of Kragodor dragons at Brightonhold.”

“It was self-defense.”

“Pray, Dravenclaw shares your assessment.”

Ianthill stopped as they exited the Migarath Portal room. “I think we should use this covering to close up the chamber. It’s beginning to rain. We may need to get back this way and I don’t want the chamber flooded.”

Morgoran reached down and helped Ianthill close the semi-heavy covering over the portal chamber. “If this meeting goes bad we need a plan.”

“Might be a wise course of action. What do you propose?”

“We must agree to get Cyrodel to Devyn at all costs. We will steal it if need be.”

“I can agree with that,” Ianthill said.

“Remember, Fawlsbane nor any of the other gods will save us. We need to do this on our own.”

“I have always wondered why gods only guide but never really directly take control of situations like this one. Couldn’t Fawlsbane just swoop in and take the sword, or command Dravenclaw to release the sword?”

“Fawlsbane explained it once to me. He said that if he interfered with everything how would that be free will for us? He also said that there must be a balance to all things and he can adjust the scales back and forth but if he is too heavy handed the scales will tip and everything will be for naught.”

“Ah, I see. It’s like apprentices. I can give them access to all the knowledge and direct them as best I can but to be a good master, I have to be able to let go and let them find their own way, even if it might hurt them.”

“Aye, but you still don’t allow them to hurt themselves too badly. You will step in if you have to.”

“It’s funny and a bit ironic,” Ianthill said sidestepping some debris.
