A Well Executed Assault. Wednesday, December 21st 1918hrs

The explosion shocked me. Making my hands twitch the steering wheel to almost send it into the wall that borders the river. We had left the motorway and were coming into Maidstone along Royal Engineers Road. Where the road meets the river in the centre of town, Big Ben’s gated community sits on the other side of the water and we were level with it when the fireball lit the sky.

There was no snow here, not yet at least, though the temperature had dropped to below freezing and there were dark clouds everywhere. I saw the clouds because the orange flame reflected off them to throw light back down on the area below.

Big Ben shouted, ‘Go!’ and go I did, slamming the gear stick back down into second and flooring the accelerator. I had to weave between the slow-moving evening traffic of late-night Christmas shoppers and people out for dinner, and I jumped first one red light, then another, then changed lanes and drove against the traffic. Maidstone town centre is a big one-way system with two bridges across the river. They form a giant roundabout which I had to fight against, opposing the flow as I tried to get to Big Ben’s place.

While I drove like a maniac, Big Ben phoned Amanda.

I heard her panicked voice answer, ‘Ben! There was an explosion outside! Where are you guys?’

‘We’re sixty seconds away. We saw the fireball! Get out of the suite now!’

‘We’re already going!’ she shouted back.

The car clanged painfully as I mounted the pavement to get around queuing cars and suddenly there were flashing lights and a wailing siren in my rear-view as a cop car tried to fight its way through the traffic after me.

The cops were giving chase, but I wanted them on my tail for what was to come.

Bursting free of the traffic as I jumped yet another red light, I hit the gas again to push the car to a suicidal speed as we closed with his building. I had to crush the brake pedal to slow the Lotus as we neared his turning and used the handbrake to coax the car’s rear end around.

There was a thick veil of smoke loitering around the gates and we both knew what caused it: smoke grenades. This was a planned assault.

The barrier pole was lying to one side and bent in the middle. The guard hut, put there so the person manning the gate could keep out of the weather and have somewhere to put a drink or a snack, had been blown to smithereens. If I had to guess, I would say a rocket propelled grenade had been used. Of the guard, I could see no sign, and that didn’t bode well for him. His health was not my dominant concern right now, getting my family, my girlfriend, my dogs, and my colleagues out of this was. To do that, required knowingly running into battle unarmed against an unknown number of assailants who had already demonstrated that they were armed.
