Chapter Fifteen

Ellis

I would pay millions for someone to take a picture of Hope’s face right now. She’s trying to analyze every word I just said while fighting with her own emotions. I understand the feeling. I was confused at first too. Realizing you’re falling for someone is never easy.

Sometimes in life a man must question himself and see how far he’s willing to go for love. Hope is stubborn, she’s used to getting her way. I know she will be a kick ass CEO. She only needs to learn how to delegate, otherwise I can see a mental breakdown in her future.

Am I intimidated by her power? Not in the slightest. But I am turned on by it.

“Hope?” Morgana asks.

She looks flustered for a minute and is adorable in my eyes. “Yes, yes!”

“Were you paying any attention to what I said?”

“What?”

I swear the woman smirks knowing her daughter wasn’t listening.

“I was asking you if you’re helping us next weekend with the houses the foundation is building.”

“Of course,” she replies and mentally I’m making notes to join whatever the Hayes’ foundation is working on. Not just for the great PR, but because that would give me the chance to be with her.

I’m taking all the chances I can get before she’s ready and willing to accept that we are meant to be together.

Alexander stands from the table and says, “Ellis, walk with me.”

A minute later we are strolling along a stone path under a long narrow wood pergola twined with vines.

“How are things going?” I know what he wants me to say. I’ll be honest, without throwing Hope under the bus.

“Good.”

He quirks a brow at me. “Are they?”

It makes me chuckle. “Yes, on Friday you found me in Hope’s office because we were discussing a different approach for the expansion. There are a lot of details we need to hammer out, but I do believe we are on the right track.”

“Really?”

“We are.”

“Ok. That’s good to hear. So, what do you think of Hope?”

“She’s amazing.” My words leave my mouth without a second thought. “She’s determined, strong, and—”

“Stubborn like a mule,” Alexander cuts me off.

“I was about to say sharp as a tack, but you know her well.”

“I do,” he sighs. “And that worries me. Hope is destined to lead the company I built from the ground up, my concerns are about the time. Maybe she needs more experience before taking over.”

“Maybe,” I find myself mumbling.

“Sadly, I’m too old to still be in charge. The Shack needs to have new life breathed into it, that’s the reason I brought you on board.”

“I understand,” I reply. “However, I’d like to set the record straight. I’m not taking the CEO chair unless Hope is on board with that.”

“You’re asking for a miracle, my boy.”

“Then I’ll stay as CFO or walk away. Your choice.”

Alexander chuckles. “You’re as stubborn as my granddaughter is.”

“I’m determined,” I correct him. Yes, I want to stay working for the company, but my end goal isn’t the job. I want her.

“I know you want to stay in San Diego,” he reminds me.
