Roger Reed owned a design firm specializing in new commercial construction. Though the firm was small, it had done well, and with an expansion in Chattanooga on the other side of the state line, Reed Design had made a name for itself.
The receptionist just inside the front entrance, a young woman, greeted me with a smile. âHi. How can I help you?â she asked me, oblivious to the ghost of a young man close by her.
âWeâreâI mean, Iâm here to see Roger Reed, please.â
âLet me see if heâs available. May I tell him your name?â
âAngela Panther.â
The young man floating beside her looked at me. âShe doesnât know Iâm here, and I donât want her to,â he said.
I nodded my understanding to him. Plenty of spirits just hung around playing the silent type because they thought their living folks were better off not knowing. Me? If I kicked the bucket before Jake, I planned to haunt him so thoroughly that he would feel me lounging on the sofa even if he couldnât see me. Just so he would know, clear as day, that I was there, waiting for him to croak, too, and probably amassing a list of complaints about how he wasnât keeping the house as clean as it should be.
âHeâs on the second floor, back office, straight down the hall,â the receptionist said. âWould you like me to take you?â
âI think I can find it,â I said.
Chris floated beside me as I walked up the stairs. âRogerâs kind of aâ ââ
I cut him off. âIâve noticed. Iâm not going to go into the whole seeing-spirits thing, okay?â
âWhy not?â
âHeâll find out soon enough,â I said. âIf he hasnât already.â
Roger met me outside his office door. âI was expecting you.â He wasnât smiling. âCome on in.â He closed the door behind me. âFor the record, I was at an out-of-town meeting with an important potential client. I have receipts to prove it.â
I smiled wryly. âI see youâve talked to Jessica.â I didnât bother sitting in the chair in front of his desk.
âWhat makes you say that?â
âIntuition,â I said. âCare to share who you were meeting with?â
âListen.â Roger planted his hands on his desk and leaned forward as if trying to appear threatening. âI donât know what makes you think Chris was murdered, and though I canât say itâs impossible, youâre the only one who seems to think itâs reality.â
âIs that a ânoâ?â I asked.
He squinted at me. âA ânoâ to what?â
âTo telling me who you were meeting with the night of Chrisâs murder.â
âI donât see the point,â Roger said. âAnd frankly, I donât see how itâs any of your business, either.â
âIâve learned innocent people donât usually have a problem sharing such information.â The statement wasnât entirely true, but he didnât need to know that.
âHave you talked to Chrisâs sister?â
His refusal to call Carol his wife or even soon-to-be ex-wife wasnât lost on me. âShe feels the same as you.â I didnât bother telling him sheâd spoken to her brother through me.
âIf thereâs anyone whoâd want Chris dead, itâs that woman,â Roger said.
