Chapter Nine
Lucas didnât want to think and he definitely didnât want to talk. But Carlin was doing something that more mates could take note of. He had pointed out Lucasâs previous bad behavior in a calm and rational manner and was asking him what had caused it. So he could understand. Although not typical Alpha behavior, Lucas appreciated it. Even though shifters were primarily humans that operated on instinct, Carlin was taking the time to communicate â clearly and effectively so there was no room for error. Lucas owed it to his mate to tell him the truth, even if the thought of it made his face go red. Taking a deep breath, he spoke.
âI just donât understand why you donât want to have sex with me anymore. Twice, claiming and then thatâs it. Iâve been hanging out for five days, and every time I try and instigate something you just move away. And when you did it again just before your fight, it fucking hurt me, so I turned the hurt to anger I guess. All that shit with Simon didnât make things any better but I tried to tell myself that maybe it wasnât me personally you werenât attracted toâ¦you know, like maybe you donât like to have sex the week before a fight or something, but it just fucking hurts when you keep pushing me away all the time, especially after Simon was in my face the other day about all the great times you and he had. I got pissed off, okay?â
There. Lucas had said it, in a rush but the words were out. Damned if he didnât feel like a prize idiot for speaking the way he did. He was sure men did not do feelings shit, but Carlin deserved to know the truth and if Lucas came out looking like some TSTL heroine in a romance novel because of it, well then so be it. He knew his face was flushed bright red, and he purposefully kept his head down on Carlinâs shoulder. Heâd never felt so embarrassed in all his life.
Big hands trickled through Lucasâs hair. Great. Now he was being treated like a girl. Fucking brilliant. But Lucas didnât move away. He wasnât going to have Carlin thinking he was still angry at him, because he wasnât. Embarrassed, yes. Pissed about Simon and Martin and all the shit that Brian had talked about, definitely. But Lucas wasnât angry at Carlin any more. Besides the fingers weaving their way through his hair felt kinda nice. Not that Lucas was going to admit it anytime soon.
âI wasnât trying to hurt you by not having sex with you.â Carlinâs deep voice was soft and lower than normal. âIâd never hurt you intentionally. Didnât you understand through our mind link what I was trying to do when Iâ¦erâ¦stopped you? All the times I stopped you?â
Lucas frowned as he thought about it. He and Carlin didnât use their mind connection very often, both preferring to say words out loud and show meaning through actions.
