Two days laterâ¦
Was I really doing this?
It was probably the most dangerous thing Iâd done since Iâd fed myself to Count Jack like filet mignon, but it had to pay off. The Council had wanted to meet with me in private; they had agreed to meeting me at the Academy in No Manâs Land, the section of underground tunnels and passages belonged to no society.
The last time I had entered that series of tunnels, it had been during an escape from the clutches of the Hierophant Society.
Now I might be delivering myself back into their clutches.
Questions. I had so many questions.
And I had to wrangle the answers from Councilor Isis somehow.
I paced in my room, checking the time on my watch every few minutes. Tyson had agreed to change the guard rotation for the Academy entrance. Since we were constantly expecting attack from the Hierophants and thus, not from below, there was only one guard on duty at any given time.
Tyson had taken up the spot for the next few hours, replacing another of the hybrids of the society.
Two minutes.
I shut my eyes and checked the cards were safely tucked in their hiding spot. It had worked in hiding them from J.P., at least. That or the dead man had been focused on finding me instead.
One minute.
It would be utterly foolishâeven more foolish than going on this trip in the first placeâto take the half-deck with me to my meeting with Councilor Isis.
Now.
I opened my bedroom door and checked both ways down the hall outside. There were candles in the hall, secured in lanterns and candlesticks, flickering day and night to provide light. The office door was open, but there was no noise inside.
I crept out and down the stairs, winding my way toward the entry hall. The living room was filled with shapes sleeping on sofas and mattresses, the guards on tonightâs rotation. It was easier if everyone slept in one place for changing guard shifts.
I took a sharp right and navigated through another smaller living room and to the door that led to the antechamber.
I opened and shut it again behind me, and I found Tyson staring at me from the gloom. He waited beside the trap door, which was now secured with a massive lock.
âIâm ready,â I whispered. âAs I can be.â
âIâm coming with you.â
âYou canât. The trapdoor will be left unguarded.â
âEvie, two days ago you almost had your jaw broken. We havenât trained at all. I know you like to think you can protect yourself, but you canât.â
âI donât think I can protect myself,â I hissed and checked my watch. âBut youâve already risked yourself enough getting the message through to Braddock. And youâre technically a fugitive.â
âIâm going to tail you. If I canât stop you from going, you canât stop me from following.â
I glared at him. âFine.â
âFine.â
I walked to the trapdoor, and he caught me by the arm, spun me around and into his chest.
He hugged me against his hard chest, tight. âIâll be watching. Iâll be your back up.
