Chapter 16
âWhat are you doing here?â he snarled.
âIs this your place?â
âFuck you.â
âYou know you really are a scumbag. How could you do something like that?â And I pointed at the puppies lying in the shade of the hedge. I was too angry to be afraid.
âIâm not doing anything. Youâre the one thatâs trespassing. Youâre the one thatâs stealing dogs.â
âSo theyâre not yours?â
He stepped closer. âI should call the police on you and have you arrested.â
âThatâs a laugh.â
He took another step toward me.
âStop.â
âWhy?â And he giggled. âDonât you want to become better acquainted?â
I reached in my pocket and took out my knife and depressed the lever. There was a satisfying click as the blade sprang out. âMaybe you want to become acquainted with this?â
âBig blade. Very impressive. I like big things.â Davis licked his lips. âThink you got the guts to use it?â
âWhy donât you come closer and find out, asshole?â
âOh, Iâll come closer all right,â he hissed. âReal close. Close enough to trim those ears of yours.â
âMaybe Iâll be the one to do it to you.â
âI donât think so.â And he took another step toward me.
As I watched him advance, watched the gleam in his eye I realized that he wasnât going to leave. He wasnât going to go away. He was coming for me. Here. In the daylight. And heâd get me. He was stronger and faster and meaner. And there was no one around to help. Even if I screamed it wouldnât matter. By the time somebody got here it would be too late. Unless I did something first. My hand closed over the knife shaft.
Davis took his time as he came toward me. He wasnât in any hurry to finish this. He was enjoying himself too much. I stood there waiting for him with my heart pounding and the blood roaring in my ears. Then when he got close enough I reached out and slashed. He jumped back. But not fast enough. A red line appeared across his upper arm. He put his hand over it. Blood seeped through his fingers. He looked down and then looked back at me in surprise.
âJust get out of here,â I said.
He smiled. âNot bad.â
âLeave.â My God, I thought, heâs coming after me again. But he didnât. Instead he turned to go. He took two steps and stopped. His eyes were cold. The pupils were dilated
âThat was fun. Weâll play again.â
âI doubt it.â The blood was still roaring in my ears.
He leered. âYouâre going to dream about me tonight. Hot dreams. The kind that burn you up.â And he walked away.
I shivered despite the heat. Jesus, had Davis thrown the Molotov cocktail through my window? I certainly wasnât going to ask him. George could do that. I gathered up the puppies and ran for the car before Davis could come back. By the time I reached the shop, they had recovered enough to create total pandemonium. When I came through the door with them Zsa Zsa took one look and dove into the dog pack while Pickles jumped on top of the counter.
