When I finally finished having my own little breakdown, I stood and wiped my face with the back of my hand. I looked down at Ren and whispered a thanks, knowing he would hear. Right then, we needed his nose, not his ears, and I needed to get myself together. He backed away, turned and began to run towards the street. Anyone who saw him wouldn’t mistake him for an average wolf. Not with his size being so much larger and his massive head marking him as unusual. Add the four of us running behind him and we would definitely be talked about. Well, three of us were running. Dixin kind of floated above the ground, gliding along with us. Willy rounded out the procession, way behind us. That was another thing that marked the whole parade as odd. A crow’s caw sounded in the distance.

Breathing hard, I managed to huff out, “Dixin, wasn’t aware you could fly. Why didn’t you do that earlier?”

He turned his head to me, not even having the good graces to have a hair out of place, and with one corner of his mouth lifted, said, “It’s a qilin thing. I do like a good chase but I have a lot of cool tricks, Everly. Ones that are a lot more fun than this and don’t involve any feet. Want me to show you?”

I scoffed, rolling my eyes at his insinuations. Even though it wouldn’t happen, I could still fantasize and the thought of fucking while flying, well gliding, was pretty hot. That would definitely be going in my rub club material. As I opened my mouth to tell the ninny to fuck off, I heard a low whine and looked to where Ren paused just ahead of us. He started towards a storage unit rental place. It looked like a midrange facility, mostly clean and surrounded with a chain link fence that had barbed wire across the top. The fencing wouldn’t be a problem for most of us, but Ren wouldn’t be able to climb while still on all fours, not to mention Willy, who was still only about halfway across the field trying to catch up. They couldn’t make the vertical climb that was needed here.

I was about to call up my fire and destroy enough for us to squeeze through when I heard a crackling noise. A glance to my left showed Kohana standing at the keypad, arm up with his palm facing the sky. I squinted my eyes, trying to see what he was doing when little flashes of light began to dance across his palm. His eyes were narrowed in concentration and the smell of ozone grew until he focused on the keypad and turned his palm towards it. The electricity raced from his palm through the keypad, destroying the guts and causing smoke to rise in the night air. Both the smell of ozone and burning plastic increased until it was nauseating when suddenly the gate clicked and swung open with a screech.
