Grass pressed against the back of my arms as I found my senses from sleep. The air was pleasantly warm, and calm light filtered through my eyelids. My eyes fluttered open, and I found myself staring up at a sunset filled sky.

Voices murmured around me, and I turned my head, resting my cheek on the grass. My group sat on blankets from the motorhome spread out on the ground. Bowls and plates and open packages had been strewn between them and they spoke to those nearest them as they ate.

Amari rested with her back against a filled crate, and when she caught I was awake, her eyes lit, her expression elevating. Fierceness and delight mingled in a perfect blend.

She’d set right the way her father had been wronged. At least as much as could be done. The survivors were freed and the Dark Lands had crumbled away. His soul could rest knowing his greatest creation no longer inspired fear.

The survivors from the Dark Lands shuffled a few feet away, convening amongst themselves. They didn’t seem interested in eating the food procured from the motorhome, but maybe they’d had dinner already before the dragons destroyed their world.

Or maybe they were still digesting what had happened in the last few hours. The thought made my stomach sick, and I hadn’t lost everything I’d known for centuries and thrust back to the central world. Their new situation would take some time to process.

I pushed myself up on my elbows, feeling every ache and bruise. A cut on the back of my arm split open, and I winced as I finished sitting upright.

Randall startled, looking up from scrying the top of his sandwich. He dropped the sandwich onto a plate in front of him and leaned forward to brace me until I found my bearings.

“How are you feeling?” he asked, brushing something off my cheek.

“Like Uwe resurrected me,” I said, and then nodded toward the Dark Landers. “Do they need anything?”

“Time, mostly.”

Sahir caught my gaze, and I lifted my chin with a small, tired smile. He said something to the woman next to him, then hurried over to me, veering around the picnic.

“Everyone is trying to understand,” he said. “Do you think the Dark Lands is gone for good, or will the consortium rebuild it?”

I tipped my head up to him, sun glaring in my eyes. “I think they are the ones who destroyed it. They meant to take you all with the destruction, but I don’t think they’re going to spend much time on this right now.”

“We can’t, either,” Randall added. “If the consortium comes for you, we will stand against them. For now—”

“Chaos,” I said, my chest constricting. “He already has Yuto’s portrait. I think he means to bind him, and he might have already. We have to stop him before he gets any of the other dark ones under his control.”

“And that’s where we come in?” Sahir gestured back to his peers that watched us, first with glances, and then eventually with outright staring.
