“BE A GOOD GIRL. MAMA will be back later. If you leave the cushions on the couch alone, I’ll have a nice little treat for you!” I crooned at the top of my lungs up the stairs. From my apartment came the most pitiable cry of rejection. I almost changed my mind and went back for her before I remembered that Marquette’s police station probably wouldn’t buy that she was my support dog and let her in. Holding firm to my convictions, I opened the door while juggling my keys and a one-quart extra-large mug of coffee, and crossed the threshold...and hit a solid wall with an oomph. Forward momentum sent most of my breakfast roast with my favorite cinnamon vanilla creamer up through the spout and down the front of the person who had been poised on the other side, her hand up, preparing to knock like any sensible person would. Anna Shilling gave a painful screech and batted at the front of her shirt, pulling the steaming fabric away from her chest with a yowl.

“Watch where you’re going!” she shouted, hopping up and down.

“It’s my apartment,” I snapped back lamely with a scowl. She stood staring at me, dripping all over my padded cement landing.

She sent me a scowl and instead sucked at the dark droplets on her hand thoughtfully. “Vanilla. And cinnamon. I don’t suppose you have any left for the ride, do you?”

I frowned in stubborn confusion, clutching my half-full mug to my chest selfishly. “Nope, you just wore half of it—and ride where?”

“To Marquette. That is where you’re headed, right?”

“It is, but how did you know that?”

She gave a shiver as the hot coffee quickly turned cold in the winter morning. “Can we carry this conversation on upstairs where it’s warm?”

“But...” I started, and then remembered I had manners and I actually liked Anna. “Oh, I suppose we should. I don’t recall that information being common knowledge.”

She shot me a quelling stare as I turned an about face and headed for the stairs. Holly would be ecstatic to see me back so soon. In my apartment, she looked up from the middle of my couch, a pillow in her mouth. “Put it down!” I admonished sternly, scowling for all I was worth, and pointing. She spat it out and hung her head in shame. I wasn’t buying the guilty act one bit.

Inside, Anna looked at my new coffee maker with interest. “How about just a single for the road?” she asked hopefully.

I plopped my purse and mug on the counter and sniffed. “Do you know how to operate that part of it? I haven’t gotten around to reading the directions for a single.”

She stared at me in surprise. “They require directions? Why don’t you just let me figure it out?”

I brightened. “That sounds fair. Can you make me one, too, to add to my mug?”

Her brows rose in amusement. “Because two cups isn’t enough?”

“Do you want a dry shirt or not?” I threatened.

She smiled sweetly
