Chapter 14

As soon as I left the office, I called Dot. “I have a name. Francis Cooper. And family.”

“They were on the boat,” she confirmed.

“Do you have anything on them?”

“Let me look; I did a search last night into all the families. Where is it? Here we go. Francis Cooper. Wife Kendra. Son Nathan. The three of them are from Grand Rapids, Michigan. He owns a small handful of car dealerships in the area. No criminal records on any of them. How’d his name come up?”

“I just spoke to Tony, Matt’s business partner. They’re working on a development up on the north shore by Paia. Apparently, Francis was getting a bit nervous about the lack of speed at which things were proceeding. He came and yelled at Tony the previous week, and I’m not sure it was a coincidence that he and his family were on that boat yesterday.”

“You’re thinking he sent the family out to snorkel while he stabbed the captain? That’s cold.”

“Tony said he was a bit of a hot-tempered guy.”

“Francis certainly sounds like a good suspect.”

“Exactly. I’m going to go talk to him now, but Tony only has a phone number for him. Can you get me an address?”

“Sure thing. Give me ten minutes.”

About thirty seconds after I ended the call with Dot, my phone buzzed again in my hand. It was Olivia.

Got Rosie’s car all fixed up. Feel free to come by anytime.

I glanced at my watch. Only about an hour had passed since I’d dropped Rosie off, and I figured she was probably fast asleep. I knew I would be. I sent her a quick text.

When you wake up, Olivia has your car ready. I can swing by and pick you up to go get it whenever.

I’m ready now, Rosie replied about twenty seconds later. The woman was a robot.

I’ll be there in five. I then threw out another quick text to Dot. No rush on that address. Going to take Rosie up to pick up her car from Olivia’s.

I work better under pressure, but all right.

I smiled at the text and hopped back into Queenie, making sure to get a good look around the parking lot before I drove off. I wasn’t about to let Connor Ham get another jump on me.

I headed over to Rosie’s, where she was waiting at the front of the complex, and she sprang into the passenger seat with way too much energy for someone who had been awake for over twenty-four hours straight.

“How’s Middie doing?” I asked, referring to Rosie’s cat, Threat Level Midnight, a.k.a. Middie. She had belonged to a family who moved out and left her to fend for herself. Then she did, creating quite the controversy in Rosie’s complex around thefts that tenants believed other people had committed.

The criminal turned out to be Middie, a cat who had a penchant for open windows and shiny objects. When she was discovered, Rosie decided to adopt the kitten and train her to… Well, I wasn’t entirely sure.

Become some sort of assassin cat, I assumed, knowing Rosie.
