Chapter 20

Belinda and Bennett left Kendal to lurk in her hotel room, meandering toward the stairs, both of their heads down in thought. “I don’t like to jump to conclusions,” Bennett said quietly, “but I’m not inclined to think she has a reason to kill her old high school friend. Even if Abigail McBride did give her the slip.”

“Me either.” Belinda blew her cheeks out, stretching up taller. “Besides, I still think it’s related to what broke up Abigail and Sophia. Everyone has been sketchy about that, Kendal most of all.”

“Which probably means she knows why.” Bennett’s lips turned down. “Maybe they were involved in something illegal.”

They traipsed back to the lobby, and as they headed out the main doors, Kyle’s girlfriend came in. Belinda and Gisel froze, blinking at each other. Then they simultaneously tried to shake it off, talking over each other.

“I wasn’t expecting…” Gisel pointed outside and then to the front desk, carrying a plastic bag. She wore a straw fedora, her dark hair waving out around her shoulders, which only framed her cheeks that flushed burgundy even in the shadows of the lobby.

“No…” Belinda said, shaking her head adamantly, feeling her own face grow warm. “We’re on our way out.”

“Right…well…” Gisel finally forced a smile, then danced around them and took off for the stairs. Bennett turned, watching her run, his forehead wrinkling.

Belinda blazed out the lobby doors, hoofing it up the street, Bennett jogging to catch up. “I wonder what that was about,” he said, keeping her pace with ease once he caught up.

“What do you think? It was probably because of the disaster the other night.” Though Belinda’s mind flickered to her fight with Kyle that morning. Would he have told his girlfriend about that?

With work to do, Belinda left Bennett’s and returned home, figuring she should settle down and take care of some business matters herself. Kyle’s Jeep was still missing, which didn’t shock her.

She tossed her handbag on the bench and dashed upstairs to change. She passed Kyle’s room at the top, then stopped midway toward her room and turned around, standing just outside Kyle’s bedroom.

It was empty.

The floor was clean, the nightstand bare, and the bed made. After a moment’s hesitation, Belinda rushed through the door and opened the dresser drawers and closet. Except for a couple of things that swung on their hangers, all his clothes were gone. But the telltale was the missing boat-in-a-bottle. It was the only knickknack Kyle kept. She thought it was a gift from someone ages ago, and for some reason, he’d always seemed attached to it.

Belinda sank onto the bed, her stomach sinking in tandem. Had Kyle moved out?
