Chapter 16

HOE LEASH IT

After Donna was cool enough to help me change rooms, I sat there, on another shitty bed, in another wonderfully shitty room, staring at all my notes. I'd been in town a few days already, and I'd done a good amount of digging around both crimes. A lot of what I found was interesting but circumstantial. I needed to find the string that attached these two tin cans.

I'd like to tell you that I put the lid back on the whiskey that night, but I didn't. I just turned off the MetallicA, so I could concentrate. Nothing against the Bay Area Thrashers, but “Creeping Death” was hardly conducive to solving two homicides.

After today's interviews, I had to reevaluate what I knew...or at least what I had to work with.

Dennis had been having an affair with Natalie Martin for several months. It was documented on video and confirmed by Natalie, herself. Given the timeline, there was a good chance that, aside from the murderer and Donna, Natalie was the last one to see Dennis Mills alive.

There was no murder weapon at the scene, and nothing was reported stolen from the body.

Natalie's husband, Officer Eric Martin, definitely needed to be looked into. He got physical with Dennis last Christmas, and I could absolutely vouch for a propensity for violence and a terrible, jealous temper.

Natalie said that Eric was home alone when she got back from her mom's. That means he wouldn't have an alibi for that whole evening. I'd have to find a way to confirm that.

JD was stabbed to death and found in the woods behind Legends Tavern. I was supposed to go snoop around there that night, but the day's events suggested I put that off until the next day.

Most of JD's friends and associates had as-of-yet unsubstantiated alibis for the night in question. There were still several holes in that mess that needed to be filled before I could cross them off my list. But LeRoy seemed certain that no one in their circle would ever have done that to their friend even if he was snitching for the local police.

Local police. Those two words caught my attention like a small chip in an otherwise-smooth table top. Local police.

A sudden spike of adrenaline insisted that I pry open my laptop. I cursed as I waited for the shitty wifi to load my email. Several new messages from Sarah. Later. I was on a mission. I opened the email she'd sent me with everyone's arrest records.

I scrolled until I finally found what I was looking for. May 19th, 2017. Johnathan Dixon was arrested for armed robbery and assault. The charges that were dropped the same day. The trumped-up charges that Sarah and I suspect might have been used to gain leverage on JD to get him to effectively roll on his entire crew of criminals.

I scrolled to the last page where I found what I was looking for. The arresting officer was fucking Eric Martin! And not
