Teledyne Tower

San Francisco Sprawl

December 2043

Mikhail was a big deal. He knew he was a big deal, and he made sure everyone else knew it, as well. No one knew him as Michael Clemson anymore; he was Director Mikhail. Capital D and capital M. Every peon he was forced to interact with showed the utmost respect to this Director, for he held their livelihood in his hand. Their actual lives, for that matter, although they may not have realized it yet.

He chuckled to himself and drew deeply on the cigarillo. Even his fellow directors treated him with respect, as he knew he was due. He was finally at the top, as far as Teledyne was concerned.

There had been stories and rumors of something bigger, bigger even than the Corporations. He had used that something’s resources on several occasions, so he knew it existed, and he wanted to find the ‘bigger’ and use it. To become it. He knew he was near a breakthrough in his search for what would come next. He could feel it, and the excitement was invigorating. So invigorating, he decided to call his assistant in to help him work off some of the excitement. It was New Year’s Eve, after all, and he deserved it.

He touched the virtual button on his holographic screen and brought up several pornographic scenes on the walls of the office. He touched another screen and said, “Serene, bring Rachel and attend me.”

He cut the comm without waiting for a reply. After dimming the lights, he moved to the giant leather lounger in the center of the room. The exterior door opened and closed very quickly. He could just make out a figure near the door and fury erupted. “WHERE IS RACHEL? I told you to bring Rachel and attend me!”

“I’m afraid that’s not going to happen, Michael.” The frigid voice sent a thrill of terror up his spine, which angered him even more.

He sputtered, “Who are you? How did you get in here?”

“Who I am doesn’t matter any longer, Michael. I let myself in.” The voice was quiet and cold as the arctic.

“What are you doing here? Do you not know who I am?” Mikhail couldn’t believe the audacity of this person.

“I believe I’ve demonstrated that, Michael. I also know things you’ve done. Unfortunately for you, it’s now time to suffer the consequences of your actions.” The voice was closer and, if possible, even more cold. “But first, I need some information from you, Michael. I need you to tell me about Mantle.”

“I’m not telling you anything!” How dare this scum come into his office and threaten him! He stood and reached for one of the security alert buttons he had positioned about the office. He would show this cretin! He would have the guards torture and maim this intruder, while he sipped vodka and smoked Havana’s best.
