Nassir

The knock at the door sounded like it was coming from far away, almost as if he was underwater. It came again and again before he was able to open his eyes. He was immediately assaulted by what felt like shards of glass pressing into his optic nerve. He’d need a couple of painkillers if he was going to make it through the day.

“Just a minute!” he barked at the person knocking. As he sat up, he noticed how sour his mouth tasted. What the hell had he eaten last night to upset his stomach? He would add an antacid with that painkiller when he got around to it.

He slid his hand across the bed and Trina’s side was cold. That meant she’d gotten up ages ago to check on the kids. It was a big day, after all, and there was lots to do.

Nassir pulled on his robe and walked to the door on unsteady legs. When he opened the door, the children’s nanny, Khadija, stood there. “I’m sorry to disturb you,” she said in deeply apologetic tones. “But I need your wife. She was supposed to finalize the children’s outfits for the ceremony and I haven’t seen her.”

“I feel like I’m moving in slow motion this morning. Can’t seem to clear the cobwebs. Are the kids ready? Wait, Trina isn’t with our children?”

Khadijah glanced past Nassir’s shoulder as if she expected to see Trina. “No, she’s not. Is she running late?” Khadija added, “It’s three hours to the ceremony.”

Nassir glanced at the bedside clock and his eyebrows lifted. He’d slept past nine A.M? “One moment,” he said, wondering where Trina could have gone if she wasn’t with their children.

Returning to the bedside table, Nassir picked up his phone to send Trina a message and saw she’d texted him several hours before. Nassir stared at the text message in bewilderment, his sluggish mind struggling to process the words.

I can’t spend another minute in this backward country.
