Global Positioning System

When the Quecreek Mine rescue occurred, GPS systems weren’t nearly as widely used as they are today. They weren’t a high-tech tool that you would find in a car or on a cell phone. Today, anyone can buy a pocket-sized GPS receiver for less than a hundred dollars.

Usually, when people talk about a GPS they mean a GPS receiver. Actually, the Global Positioning System refers to a network of twenty-four Earth-orbiting satellites called Navstars. The Navstars are used to send signals to a GPS receiver. The receiver’s job is to locate four or more of these Navstars, calculate the distance to each one, and use that data to deduce the exact location of the receiver.
