A Climbing Controversy

News reports about the combined climbing and helicopter accidents raised questions about mountain safety. People asked whether mountaineers taking part in the thrill sport of climbing had a right to put the rescuers’ lives at risk.

Steve Rollins brushed these questions aside. “The key thing to understand is that no one forces search and rescue team members to rescue climbers. Just as the climbers know and accept the risks of their climb, rescuers know and accept the risks of the rescue. We choose to do it; we accept responsibility for our own actions. For me mountain rescue is as much a sport as mountaineering is. And it’s rewarding to be able to help someone out.”

In recent years, mountain search and rescue teams have become a vital part of the mountaineering scene. The bravery and self-sacrifice of these rescuers have helped save many lives. But search and rescue expert Rollins warns, “Some people think rescue work is glamorous. We discourage these people from joining the rescue team. In reality, most rescue work is very hard, in difficult and relatively dangerous conditions.”
