For three days, from December 13, 1988, Berdella recited his confession, the transcript running eventually to 717 pages. His murder spree, he said, had started in 1984, with the killing of Jerry Howell. Berdella claimed he’d loaned Howell money, which Howell had refused to pay back. Angered by this, he had drugged Howell then sodomized him and beaten him with a metal rod. This continued over two days before Howell died. Berdella claimed his death was accidental.

Berdella had hung the body over the bath to drain it of blood. This had excited him and he’d taken lots of photos. Then he took the corpse down and used kitchen knives and a chainsaw to dismember it. He’d placed the pieces in plastic bags and left them at the curb with the trash. After a week or two he’d sat down and made notes about the murder.
