Ginger gave in to Trout’s insistence that she leave him in charge. She couldn’t convince him that all his effort would be wasted because she was too wired to sleep. Maybe it was because she was so wired that she gave in. Usually, she was calm and in control. This internal turmoil was new to her. Now, in her bed in her pajamas, she tossed and turned.

After twenty minutes, she gave up and went to her desk to make a list. It was one of the tricks she had learned from her grandmother. When the demands of the day wouldn’t let go, write them down, then rewrite the list by priority. Doing so freed the mind of fear that something important would be forgotten. This wasn’t exactly a list of things that needed to be done but hopefully, the process would have the same affect.

She decided to write down everything that happened from the time Liberty Anderson checked into the Paradise. First, she noted the guests in the Flamenco Suite were already on the premises, having checked in two days earlier. Another couple had one of the cottages near the pool.

Liberty arrived late Monday afternoon. The room overlooking the pool and the gardens didn’t suit her. She wanted one of the more spacious rooms on the front of the bed and breakfast. Since she was willing to pay the higher rate, Ginger switched her to the empty Toucan Suite. As soon as Liberty checked in and deposited her bags in her room, she had gone out.

The Talents, Ray and Crissy, arrived at about nine on Tuesday morning. Ginger sat back in her chair and tapped the notebook with her pen. Why hadn’t she realized this before? Now she saw their arrival so soon after Liberty checked in as suspicious.

She gave herself a mental shake. No jumping to conclusions, she told herself. At this point it was all circumstantial. State the facts, she told herself, and see where they lead.
