Chapter Fifteen

I decided against calling Logan. If we were going to threaten Damon, I didn’t want him around. And since we didn’t know where Damon lived, we ended up at Divine Goddess Bookstore. My mom, Amber, and Spooky came with me while Callie and Luna delivered all of the baked goods to the Toasty Bean. We had tried everything, and none of us were dead yet, so it seemed like they were safe.

We could have summoned Ida to figure out where Damon lived—she had gone with Bradley to help him—but I wanted to learn whatever I could about him first. Meagan had at least met him before. Maybe she could tell me something useful. Something that would make him willingly work with us to find the necromancer.

I parked on the street and lifted Spooky as I got out of the car.

My mom and Amber both got out on the other side, the latter of whom looked over the hood toward the purple and silver sign. “How . . . tacky.”

Clutching Spooky, I glanced at the sign, then shrugged. “I like it.”

I led the way toward the door and the three of us went inside. It was busier than the previous day, mostly tourists looking for something ghoulishly festive to do before the parties took place in the evening. A few of them noticed Spooky and looked me up and down, but quickly went back to what they were doing. Even with the cat, I probably looked less like a witch than anyone else in the shop. If only they knew the truth.

I wove my way to the front of the store, finding Meagan behind the register. She wore a sleek black dress with a massive black witch’s hat atop her blonde curls. Her eyes went a little wide as she noticed me, then she glanced at my mom and Amber just behind me. She quickly finished bagging up her customer’s purchases, then leaned her hands on the counter as we stepped up for our turn.

“Can I help you, detective?”

Amber snorted behind me.

Ignoring her, I smiled pleasantly and stepped closer to the counter. It was a bad idea to impersonate a homicide detective, but she had drawn that conclusion on her own. I might as well work with it. “I just have a few more questions for you. Do you have a moment?”

Frowning, she looked past me to her busy shop. “Not really. Is it urgent?”

Tired of holding him, I set Spooky on the counter. I wasn’t about to leave empty-handed. “I’m just wondering how well you know Damon Maxwell.”

Her lips parted, and she stared at me for just a second. Apparently I had caught her off guard. “He’s Bradley’s brother. What about him? Is he a suspect?”

“Not a suspect,” I assured before she got any funny ideas. “Do you know him well?”

She started to shake her head, then stopped. “I don’t really know him, but he did throw the party where we met that creepy guy we told you about.”

Her reaction to the mention of Damon had me hesitating to ask for his address.
