CHAPTER 17

Malachi

Cordelia took a long, dramatic swig of the emerald glass bottle, her lips dripping with the red wine as she pulled it away and passed it in my direction.

“Is tonight a good night to be drinking?” Jade asked from the stone ground beside me. I glanced back to Cordelia, awaiting her answer.

She had taken us to a small stone cave, hidden in the depths of the temple. Condensation dripped from the cold walls around us, the sound of water constantly filling our silence.

“Trust me, honey,” Cordelia answered. “There couldn’t possibly be a better time.”

I took the bottle from her and drank. The taste of wine had never been my favorite, but dulling my senses didn’t sound like the worst thing in the world. Especially after that damned feast.

I passed the bottle to Jade. “Is this fae wine?” she asked. “Or human wine?”

“Drink it,” Cordelia ordered. “Either way, it will make you feel better.”

If it weren’t for the light amount of pity and care that laced her words, I would have snapped at her for telling Jade what to do. But deep down, I started to understand that Cordelia had a soft heart. Even if it was hidden beneath layers and layers of Paragon skin.

Jade drank.

We stayed that way for a while, passing the bottle around and taking sips. The three of us were so different, but I knew that the same feeling of dread and anticipation hung in the air for all of us.

None of us wanted tomorrow to come, yet none of us could do anything to stop it.

“If you knew,” Jade said after a while, breaking the calming blanket of silence, “if you knew what my trials would be, would you tell me?” She looked at Cordelia with a heart-wrenching amount of hope in her big, warm eyes.

Cordelia’s jaw tightened. She took a long gulp of the bottle before setting it down on the stone ground before us. “Did Malachi ever tell you about my best friend, Tempesta?” Cordelia asked.

I felt Jade’s eyes slide over to me, but I averted my eyes. I knew the story of Tempesta all too well, and the last thing I wanted to do was tell Jade about her.

“No,” Jade answered softly.

“She was my sister. Not by blood, of course, but in spirit. She was my other half, my better half. She was kinder than me, smarter than me. I envied her for it, really, but nobody else saw her that way. She was a fae, born and raised. Her magic existed, but she struggled to wield it. She wasn’t strong like Malachi and I. She was…she was innocent.”

I kept my eyes glued to the floor. Jade remained silent, although I could hear her heartbeat picking up.

“She was raised here in the Paragon, and after only two decades in this world, Silas made her…” Her voice cracked. She cleared her throat before picking up the bottle once more. “Silas made her complete the Trials of Glory. We all saw it coming, of course.
