Chapter Eight

The damn building was close to being a fortress, but there was always a way in if he looked hard enough. Gary had proven that time and again. Once he got his hands on his old roommate, he could move his show on the road. A state-by-state road trip. He’d always wanted to see America.

He shuffled to the back of the commercial van he’d hotwired outside Nevada. He enjoyed watching his prey from behind the darkly tinted windows. No need to hide himself behind the pleasant expression he wore to entice his victims closer.

It could have been his well-practiced smile or his golden hair—a gift from his mother—but they always came to him. The moment he thought of her, Gary growled and clenched his teeth in rage. The traitor had turned her back on him, her son, and he’d never forget or forgive her betrayal. One day Rachel, that back-stabbing bitch would pay for her lack of loyalty. None of that mattered now. All that remained was to make Trey pay for ruining his mission. The voices were quiet now, but it wouldn’t last long. It never did, and then he’d be forced to hunt again to gain a respite from their constant demands.

Using the tip of his boot, he pushed the limp, pale arm back under the faded, torn tarp. He had to find a place to drop off his cargo before his hunt began anew tomorrow.

In a couple of days, he’d find a new vehicle, maybe even something with that Californian vibe. A sunroof sounded about right. He’d never be able to continue his work using a convertible unless he found the perfect location to provide him with the privacy he needed.

“Candy apple red.” His voice cracked from disuse, and the iron taste in his mouth confirmed his split lip had reopened. He didn’t remember the women he’d picked up years ago being as strong as these last few. In the end, it still hadn’t stopped him from his mission.

They didn’t matter. None of his sacrifices did. Trey’s end would come, and once Gary had
