Over the days, a few more British officers parachuted in, and others came in over land. One of the newcomers was Lieutenant Gavan Duffy, a tall, stiff man with dark hair and eyes and a distinct mustache. Duffy was a demolition expert who was teaching partisans how to blow up bridges, roads, and Nazi vehicles. His father died when Duffy was a boy, so Duffy had worked in construction from a young age to help his family get by. He developed a strong mechanical aptitude, and when he hooked on with the Royal Engineers, he also developed a knack for making bombs and laying mines.

Duffy had heard about the stranded Americans shortly after they crash landed, and he’d been trying to catch up to them ever since. As they chatted with Duffy, the Americans began to gain an appreciation for the massive effort the Brits were putting into Albania in general and into rescuing them especially. Duffy was a whiz with weapons, explosives, and mechanics—and he survived in the wild of Albania on his own.

Duffy did have some help from an intelligence officer named Jon Naar, who was stationed in Cairo. Naar’s expertise was intelligence. He spoke German, French, and passable Russian and Arabic. Naar coordinated the British movements on a map covered with pushpins. He tracked Nazi and Ballista movements and helped coordinate attacks on the Nazis.

Duffy explained that with Naar’s help, he and his assistant, Sergeant Herbert Bell, would lead the Americans to safety. Joining them would be Steffa, Pandee, and several armed guerillas. An American officer, Captain Lloyd Smith, had left Bari and was heading their way. He’d meet them in the mountains and take them the rest of the way to a coastal hideout called Seaview.

The Americans were delighted to finally have a straightforward plan after three weeks of what seemed like blind wandering.
