Chapter 42
Los Alamos, New Mexico to San Antonio, New Mexico
The drone of the helicopter blades drowned out conversation.
Gina's copilot handed out noise canceling headsets.
Amber checked the headset and put it on.
"You won't be able to speak to people outside the helicopter," the copilot said. "Keep these on while we are moving to hear changes in directions. Can everyone hear me?"
Amber nodded.
Alex, Corbo, Livia, and San Antonio's mayor did as well.
"If an emergency comes up, push this button, and I, or Gina will hear you. We can override you."
Amber nodded again. Good to know.
Amber wiggled, unable to be still. There wasn't much time to save the religious fanatics. If they found and rescued them, maybe Gina would fly a line across the route Amber's mom might have taken to find Brandon. She bounced in her seat with hope.
Alex laughed.
Outside, the scenery slowly changed as they flew down the river. A little less than one hundred and fifty miles by air. The water swirled, with nowhere to go. Trees, brush, and anything caught in its path swept along caught behind the blockade. At least they were far enough up; they couldn't see if the bits were people or animals.
Amber pointed as they came closer to San Antonio.
Three tour buses parked beside the river in a field. A crowd of people chanted and yelled toward the buckled bridge across the river. The bridge they had driven across on the way to Kirtland days before, which Dr. Evan didn't trust.
The mayor of San Antonio sat across from Amber and wrung her hands.
Gina's copilot pointed at their bags.
The helicopters descended.
Amber grabbed her backpack and walking stick. Not much protection if the crowd turned unruly, as they were likely to do. However, there had been no time for them to learn how to use a more reliable weapon.
Gina sat the helicopter down as gently as she could.
The blades rotated slower and slower.
The door opened and her copilot stepped out. He held his out to San Antonio's mayor.
When the mayor stepped out, the crowd roared.
"Send them away!"
"Give us our river back!"
"Give us our land back!"
The mayor held her hand up and waited for the relative calm that the over one hundred and fifty people gathered on the river's edge would give her. The river's gurgle would not quiet.
The mayor raised a megaphone to her mouth. "Do any of you live in San Antonio?"
Amber stood inside the helicopter behind the mayor.
Alex and Corbo behind her.
A few raised their hands.
"The town has been evacuated for safety reasons. A series of waves will flood through here shortly." The mayor waved her arm.
"Please, return to your buses for an escort to safety."
The protestors screamed and shouted, running towards the helicopter.
Amber gripped her walking stick.
Soldiers stepped out of the other three helicopters and formed a semi-circle around the mayor.
The ground shook.
Amber grabbed Alex's arm.
The crowd paused as if against a brick wall.
Amber, Alex, and Corbo stepped down to the ground beside the mayor.
Livia hobbled to the door.
The river swirled and sloshed over its banks.
