âMarkx, Agnes! Report!â
At first, she wasnât sure sheâd heard correctly, but then she heard her name again.
Despite her apprehension, she stood and raised her hand. âHere!â The guards waved her over. She pointed at her basket of clothes. âWhat about these?â
âLeave them; youâre needed somewhere else.â
She slowly walked through the chaos of the people sorting clothes. Some glanced up and gave her looks of encouragement, while others kept their heads down. Whenever guards showed up for transfers, people stayed out of sight. Transfers away from the clothing commando were hardly ever good. Agnes had seen plenty of people taken away, never to be seen again.
She reached the guards. âArm.â Agnes lifted her arm and rolled up the sleeve of her coat to expose her tattoo. One of the guards checked the paper he was holding and nodded. âFollow us.â
Agnes felt her heart in her throat as they navigated through the maze of activity in Kanada. As they reached the road connecting Kanada to the main thoroughfare, she saw crematoria 2 and 3 only a few hundred meters ahead. Their chimneys belched out ominous dark plumes of smoke. The guards walked in the same direction. Agnes felt her heart beating in her chest. She wiped her clammy hands on her trousers. Is this it?
They continued for another fifty meters until they reached the intersection with the main road. There stood a small army car and much to Agnesâ surprise, they opened the door and told her to get in. The engine roared to life, and soon they were headed toward the campâs gatehouse, past the womenâs camp where sheâd spent the past month. Soon they cleared the gatehouse, leaving Birkenau and the deadly crematoria behind.
