Widow:

A widow does not change her name

from when she was married.

While the envelope calls for formal address and the use of various titles, the inside letter doesn’t need to stand by such ceremony. Address the actual note or letter as befits your relationship with the recipient. A friend or relative is called by his first name (“Dear Phillip”); a professor, a friend of a parent, or other category of elder is addressed as Professor, Dr., Mr., and so forth.

Envelope Flaps

Most envelopes made during the nineteenth century featured a teardrop-shaped flap, but today these are not in wide use. In fact, there aren’t very many options within the category of envelope-flap styles.

Here are the choices:

Pointed flap: The most elegant, traditional and formal style—also called a “Baronial” envelope.

Square flap: Provides a younger, more contemporary appearance—and a larger area for designs or for return addresses that are printed in a larger typeface.

Deckle edge: Used only when the paper is also made with a deckle, or torn, edge and only with square flaps.
