John’s jaw dropped as the two of them stepped through the portal onto floor 16. The ground rumbled, but not from the impact of monsters. They stood in an air-conditioned lobby with a checkerboard-tiled floor. Several dozen chairs sat throughout the area, providing a place to sit and wait. The room was much longer than it was wide, with one wall being taken up by a long row of counters and receptionists. They were helping an assortment of fantasy races register for…something. John glanced at the closest counter, where three goblins stacked on top of each other were frantically filling out a large volume of paperwork.

That, though, wasn’t the important part. The other wall was a long, glass window that looked out over an immense racetrack. John walked up to the panes and looked down, beginning to salivate as a number of tricked-out cars roared back and forth, up and down and over obstacles. A yellow car surged to the lead, dropping several hissing bombs behind as it did so. They exploded violently as a red car passed over them, and the flaming vehicle flew up to land in the stands as spectators frantically dove out of the way.

“A racing game,” Farida muttered the word like a curse as she came walking up to stand next to John. “Please, please no. We’re only on floor 16. Are you telling me that the creators of this place were already out of ideas by the sixteenth floor?”

“I’m sure there’s a reason for it.” John shrugged. “Besides…” A boyish flitter of excitement fluttered through his chest, and he started to dance from one foot to the other. “This is a racing game!”

Farida raised an eyebrow, then sighed. “I will never understand where you men get your endless enthusiasm for chaos and destruction.”

“I’m not a fan of chaos. Not in the slightest.” John held up a finger. “Remember the university? Still hate it. I have nightmares all the time about it. Now…this?” He spread his arms wide as the yellow car went screaming across the finish line. Fire exploded upward from piles of tires, and his grin nearly split his face. “This is what I’m talking about! Besides, it’s better than a farming simulator.”

“Please don’t mention that possibility.”

“What about a match-three floor?”

“No. I think I’d just leave the tower and take my chances in the wilderness.” Farida scowled.

“Endless runner?”

“Would you stop it?” Farida scowled. “We’ve established that I’m a little on edge today. It’s really not the time to be joking about what else might lie in this tower.”

John held up his hands in mock defense, then glanced at his mini-map. He had missed the notification, but it looked like he had managed to snag the waypoint.

“You have a place to teleport back to?”

Farida paused, then nodded. “Yeah.”

“Good.” John pulled a teleporter crystal out of his pocket. “You can either stay here, come join me in the council chambers, or go back to my house.
