Calibres and Kill-Zones

I’ll always choose the small .177 calibre pellet, time in and time out for the dove but any of the popular calibres will suffice. Head shots and full on breast shots will see this bird cleanly dispatched. Remember though the head shot is very small. This takes accuracy especially shooting at awkward angles so more often than not I’ll always take this bird with a shot that punches straight into the upper part of the chest cavity.

When you’ve shot your doves, don’t waste them as the breast meat is quite tasty. Tougher than woodpigeon but cooked slowly and for a longer period it’s worth the trouble of breasting enough to make into a stew or casserole. Mixed in with a bit of woodie, rabbit meat and root vegetables you’ve got a tasty meal and the farmer gets to ‘lose’ yet another cause of potential loss of earnings.
