Interlude 7: The War for Ithkara, Part 4

Four miscreated came for Lorn at once. All had the Monster god’s aspect, and two bore the ruby aura of War. The other two were mismatched, one having being silver-threaded, and the other acidic green.

Backpedaling, he made a gesture and activated one of his abilities.

Death’s Doors: You create a barrier of dark mist. Any creature that enters the mist has a chance to die. This chance is based on the discrepancy between your level and theirs. Creatures that survive will suffer significant trauma.

Ignoring the barrier, all four miscreated rushed through. The silver one collapsed and the power infusing its body sped away to merge with one of its allies.

Lorn: They aren’t immune to instant death effects.

The soldiers assigned to him for this mission reacted instantly. They’d already been racing to help him, but one had readied a movement power. An akkoan woman in wrapped black leather stepped out of the thin air, as if she’d just opened a door, and made a tossing gesture at the three monsters. Black, smoking beads rotated free of her dexterous fingers, spreading a fog threaded with necromantic mana.

A miscreated surged forward, ahead of its peers, and through the mist. The silver now winding through its body mixed with the red, creating a protective shield across its skin. Closing the distance with the woman, it struck as Lorn loosed an arrow at near point-blank range.

The claws of the triple-infused monster sliced into the woman’s stomach and stopped. Rippling runes, tattoos from the Creation Chamber, slammed into place, pushing the attack away. They also closed the wound.

An arrow struck the monster in the space where its eye should have been. The hardened shell cracked, splintering as if there were a layer of glass on top of the shell. Silver light bloomed in the gap, just before another arrow struck it in a spot three inches away from the first.

Lorn’s extra shot stole precious time. The remaining two miscreated had gotten through the barrier. Absorbing the freed abilities of their companions, both flew at the akkoan woman. Blood sprayed as the monsters pushed through her tattooed defenses. She didn’t scream. With one hand, she drew a dagger and stabbed the War-infused one beneath the jaw. The blade bit deep.

Awon: Lorn! Shoot the god! Clarion is in danger.

Cursing, Lorn aimed away from his struggling ally.

The god descended slowly, radiating a corona of filth and corrosion that blanketed the ground beneath it. Wherever that aura touched, its monstrous allies gained strength and speed. Clarion’s racial abilities told him what it was, if not the Volaran name for it. It was Entropy, or some variation of the ideal.

Flapping his wings for clearance above the army, Clarion watched the shape emerge from the clouds. It looked like a tortured mass of flesh, as indistinct as pudding. Faces and limbs pushed against the interior of the god, reaching desperately to escape their grotesque prison. He wasn’t sure if those were the god’s worshippers, his captives, or merely its self-expression.
