But in the morning, Tola is standing with Grandmommy outside Mr. Abdul’s door. Tola is carrying a bag with her spare dress and her math notebook.

“They are good people,” Mr. Abdul says, looking at Grandmommy. “You are doing the right thing.”

Grandmommy says nothing.

Tola is holding tight to Grandmommy’s hand. Far too tight to let go.

But she knows that if she does not let go there will only be more subtraction and no chance of addition or multiplication. And then, one day, there will be nothing left at all.

So very, very slowly Tola lets go of Grandmommy’s hand.

And very, very quickly Mr. Abdul puts Tola on the back of his big black bicycle. And very, very quickly he rides away. That way Tola does not see Grandmommy cry.

Tola leans her head against Mr. Abdul’s back. She cannot believe this is happening.
