Chapter 26

Nadia. 1984. Timeline 2.

* * *

Nadia Roseland stared at the stack of hundred dollar bills on the table in front of her and tried to form words. She’d been in Johnny’s apartment for nearly six hours. She’d cried for much of it. Stared at the walls for some. Even slept somehow. Maybe her body didn’t know what to do with her. She’d read about how shock did strange things to people.

She’d thought about Cass the whole time. Even while dreaming.

Now this guy was back.

Johnny had a weird look on his face. Pride?

“I want you to have this. I think it’s what Cassius would’ve wanted.”

Five thousand dollars.

She could admit she’d never seen that much money in person before. But she’d seen plenty of movies. Certainly wasn’t enough to have any feelings about it.

She stared back at Johnny. “But what about who killed him? Your boss said he was going to find out who killed my brother. He said he has ways.”

“He does.”

“So when is he going to do it?”

Johnny ran a hand through his hair. “Look, I don’t know when exactly, but soon, all right?”

“When is soon?”

“Soon soon. Like soon. Are you even looking at this right here?” He gestured to the money.

She looked. She looked at him too. What did he think, that because he had brought her this stack of bills that she would stop thinking about her brother getting murdered?

“Someone killed him,” she said. “Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“You said you would help me.”

“And I am. Look, I know this money is not like, fixing the fact that Cassius is gone, but maybe think of it as his last gift to you. And, you know, a gift from me too.” He stood up and moved around the table, pulling a chair closer to hers. He sat and put an arm around her shoulder. “I told you I’m going to take care of you now. That’s what I mean.”

She felt the weight of his arm on her. A yoke. Maybe something else.

She knew what he meant. She was supposed to feel grateful. He was her knight in shining armor. She’d known guys like this. Got off on being a protector. Like he owned her now just because she was hurt. She was grateful. But she barely knew him. Had Cass even known him that long? She’d heard his name a few times. Seen him maybe once?

Now he was looking at her, holding her shoulder. He wasn’t that old. Maybe twenty-two? All right looking too, even if he seemed to know it. But too old to be hanging all over her. What did he expect, she was going to look at that stack of money and get the urge to take her clothes off?

“Where did you get the money?”

“Job Cassius was planning to do with me today. Pretty big deal.”

“And this boss of yours put you up to it?”

“Mickey? Sure. He takes care of everybody. I told you that.”

“Didn’t take care of Cass.”

Johnny clenched his jaw. “Today was a bad situation. Unrelated to us.
